Exhibition at University Art Museum takes the idea of curator to the next level

"Pieces of Nine: Reframing the Collection," an exhibition at the University Art Museum, highlights not just the individual art pieces but promotes the idea of cohesiveness between many curators of a single exhibit.

This exhibit, first unveiled on Jan. 28, is a coalition of many different curators instead of the usual single curator. Each curator was given a marked space of the exhibit to do with it what they wanted and essentially express their individual style apart from the other curators.

This rare take on an art direction helps promote various themes in the exhibition and according to the University Art Museum these themes range from "the light-hearted to the political to the many faces of angst." As a result, this pieces (no pun intended) together many "micro-exhibitions" into one single steady exhibition.

A review by Gazettes.com notes that "'Pieces of Nine' works on a conceptual level, but at times feels slightly disjointed." The article goes on to say that the exhibition has an impressive roster of artists showcased and each mini exhibit shows a different theme from the next and "this type of approach to curating shows pushes the boundaries of expertise."

This exhibition runs through April 18.
